A garden awarded the prestigious Jardin Remarquable label
Lisieux Normandie is home to three of the eight “Remarkable Gardens” in Calvados. Canon Castle Gardens are definitely worth a visit! Surrounding a superb 18th-century castle listed as a Historic Monument, no less than 15 hectares of exceptional gardens are just waiting to be explored.
Formal French gardens
The classical architecture of the castle is enhanced by the surrounding gardens. Symmetrical paths, a ceremonial courtyard, rectilinear planting beds, mirror pool… Every attention is paid to balance and perspective at Canon.
Informal English gardens
Venture further into the castle grounds to discover the English gardens. Irregular layouts, winding canals, dense groves, waterfalls… the more subtle landscaping gives way to the romanticism of nature.
Period follies
As you stroll through the gardens, you will be intrigued a number of follies. The Chinese pavilion, the Greek temple… These follies, typical of the 18th century, are dotted throughout the garden and surrounded by lush vegetation.
Walled “chartreuse” gardens – unique in France
850 metres of walls form 10 linked walled gardens, known as “chartreuses”. These gardens were once real open-air greenhouses where, sheltered by the walls, magnificent fruit could blossom.
